A plugin adds to a program's capabilities without requiring re-compilation or re-installation of the main program. 

Plugins provide third-party developers with a means to integrate their special content into web sites, which would not otherwise be viewable, for example, formats such as Flash, SVG, video, audio, etc.

Plugins enable users to view additional types of content via their web browsers, often granting additional functionality to the web browser.
