Content Management System
A content management system is a collection of tools and applications used to manage content found on a web site. These CMS systems provide a non-technical user with the ability to update, modify, add and delete content and photos from a web site.
The design or presentation of the content is most always not controlled by the CMS, rather the CMS is used to control the actual web content. In some cases the CMS will allow the content developer or web site administrator to control some attributes of the content, such as bolding or italicizing text for emphasis.
There are different levels of Content Management Systems, and some are much more flexible than others. Many times, a CMS may need to be customized for a specific web site, rather than trying to force fit a web site into a pre-existing solution. Trying to force fit a solution will most times result in a web site that appears similar to others regarding layout and design.
