Editing an existing Thunderbird Email profile - when ISP Blocks Port 25

If you want to edit an existing email account's settings, here are some guidelines that assumes that your ISP blocks Port 25.

If your ISP does not block Port 25, click here for instructions. If you are not sure, contact your ISP's customer service - or you may first try the settings that assume Port 25 is not blocked. (If the settings work, then you are all set.) If they do not work, a possible reason is that Port 25 may be blocked. However, if there are issues, you should confirm with your ISP whether Port 25 is blocked since this is a very common cause of server connectivity failure.

1. Access your email account settings by selecting Account Settings under the Tools menu.

2. Select the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", choose the SMTP server you want to change then click on Edit.

3. If your ISP blocks Port 25, you will not be able to use "mail.corp-com.com" as your outgoing server and will instead have to use your ISP's server. (If your ISP does NOT block Port 25 click here.)

Type in your ISP's outgoing or SMTP server name in the "Server Name" dialog box. (In some cases, you may even have to use your ISP's incoming server.) Below, under "Security and Authentication" you should require authentication. Check the box for "Use name and password" then enter in your username for the ISP. Click OK then click OK again for the Account Settings window.

You should be all set! The next time you try to connect a dialog box will appear asking for a password. Enter your ISP password and select the option to remember so that you will not be asked to enter a password again.
